Mark qualified from the prestigious Guys Hospital Dental School in 1991. After graduating, Mark worked in London for several years before returning home to his native Yorkshire in 1994. Mark passed his membership exams of the Faculty of General Dental Practice in February 1998. In July 2004 he was awarded the Advanced Level Certificate of the Diploma in Implantology from the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
He was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in October 2009. Mark’s training has involved not only the formal Diploma programme; he has also been to conferences, lectures and study programmes all over the world. For 10 years Mark worked at Manchester University Dental Hospital where he worked in the department of Oral Maxillo Facial Surgery, exclusively spending his time working on all aspects of surgical dental implantology. This gave him valuable experience treating very advanced cases including patients who had significant deformities caused by extreme trauma and in the rehabilitation of patients who had surgery for oral cancer.
Mark was Postgraduate Dental Tutor for the Yorkshire Deanery based at the University of Leeds from January 2002 to March 2006. He has chaired the Education Committee at the Faculty of General Dental Practice, Yorkshire Division from September 2004 to June 2006 and was subsequently made Director of the Yorkshire Division in September 2007. Mark was course tutor on the Diploma in Implant Dentistry at the Royal College of Surgeons. This has been formally recognised by the General Dental Council as the gold standard course in implant education in the United Kingdom. Mark was invited to be a tutor on this programme at its inception in 2003 and has been involved with the programme ever since.
Mark is also an Honorary Clinical Teaching Fellow at Manchester University Dental Hospital where he is involved in teaching the Masters students in Implant Dentistry. Mark was one of the first board members on Astra-Tech Platform Exchange for Education and Research (PEERS) and has been involved in research projects in Implant Dentistry for over 10 years. He was one of the co-authors who published a Cochrane Review on Immediate Loading in Dental Implantology.
Mark runs study programmes for General Dental Practitioners and has lectured widely all over the UK on the use of dental implants in General Dental Practice. Mark is Director of the very successful Horbury Dental Implant Clinic and he has a huge wealth of experience on Dental Implants & Dental Implant systems; not only on how these can be used to restore a patient’s ability to chew and function, but also how they can be used to achieve the best results, in many cases restoring dignity and confidence.
Mark is from a family of dentists and indeed he is himself the fourth generation in his family; his great grandfather practiced in Leeds and his grandfather, grandmother and father all practiced in Horbury, Wakefield. Mark is married to Kate and they have two children, Harriet and Alexandra. Harriet is currently studying Dentistry at Newcastle University and Alex is currently studying Philosophy at the University of Exeter.
Outside of dentistry, Mark enjoys cycling, and is an extremely keen road cyclist. He has completed a number of challenges over the last few years including Lands’ End to John O’Groats in 7 days. His other hobbies include going to the gym to maintain his fitness for his cycling endeavours. He also enjoys shooting and if the time allows, he is also keen on travel. Mark and Kate are also involved in a great deal of fund raising and are the Ambassadors of the Wooden Spoon children’s charity, who help fund projects to improve the lives of disadvantaged and disabled children.
