Hygiene / Air Flow

We currently have three dental hygienists at Horbury Dental Care, all of who are caring, gentle and understanding. The hygienist's main work is to prevent and treat gum disease including professionally cleaning your teeth. This is usually called ‘scaling and polishing'. However, perhaps their most important role is showing you the best way to keep your teeth free of plaque. Plaque is a sticky coating that forms constantly on your teeth. If it is not brushed away properly, this hardens to form tartar which you cannot remove yourself. They also give advice on diet and preventing dental decay. All of our hygienists work alongside your dentist to give you care that is tailored to your needs.

Our hygienists also provide a service called ‘Air Flow’. This is where a controlled stream of air, water and sodium bicarbonate passes through a mixing nozzle to allow polishing of the enamel of the tooth. Sodium bicarbonate is a mild polishing agent. Air polishing should be differentiated from air abrasion, which uses an aluminium dioxide abrasive to remove tooth structure prior to the placement of restorations. Air polishing is a great way to remove stains from the teeth such as coffee, tea, red wine and food stains and is a great treatment to have before upcoming events such as weddings, parties and holidays.
