Referral Case Studies
Below are a selection of case studies of treatment journeys carried out by some of our referral team.
Immediate Implant With Nick Lane
This 30-year-old patient presented with a fractured, mobile, root-treated upper left central incisor. The case was challenging due to a high smile line and associated buccal plate damage. An immediate implant was placed to preserve both bone and soft tissue, with a temporary crown loaded on the same day to provide an instant aesthetic improvement.
IMPLANT SELECTION – SOUTHERN IMPLANTS INVERTA:
- Body Shift Design: Provides high primary stability, ideal for immediate placement.
- Narrow Coronal Portion: Protects the buccal plate, ensuring optimal aesthetic outcomes.
- DC Connection with 12° Angle Correction: Facilitates ideal screw access in the cingulum for a smoother restoration process. By selecting the appropriate implant and technique, the treatment delivered excellent long-term function and aesthetics.
Full Mouth Implant – With Nick Lane
Caring for this wonderful patient over the past 10 years has been a privilege. She initially presented as a terminal periodontal case, dissatisfied with the appearance of her upper dentition but determined to retain her natural lower teeth for as long as possible.
Eight years ago, a full-arch immediate load restoration was completed in the upper jaw. Thanks to her dedication to oral hygiene and regular professional maintenance, most of her remaining lower teeth were successfully maintained for an additional eight years before undergoing a full-arch immediate load in the lower jaw.
- The upper reconstruction, a titanium beam with an acrylic wrap, continues to stand the test of time, demonstrating the longevity of well-planned implant treatment.
- This case also reflects an evolution in implant selection, with an increasing preference for Southern’s range of site-specific implants to optimise outcomes.
- In the lower jaw, Southern’s Max and Co-Axis implants were used to achieve excellent primary stability in immediate posterior sites and enable anterior angle correction without the need for angled multi-unit abutments.
This case highlights the impact of thoughtful treatment planning, high-quality implant selection, and ongoing maintenance in achieving long-term success for patients.
Endodontics With Tom Willan
This patient was referred to Tom Willan for endodontic treatment of her UL6. A conservative access cavity was made and four canals found.
- All canals were prepared to full working length with the ProTaper Ultimate system and obturated with the warm vertical condensation technique and AH+ epoxy resin sealer.
- The existing amalgam restorations were replaced with a composite core and the patient was returned to the referring dentist for a final indirect restoration.
Restorative With Tom Rawlins
Mr R was unhappy with his smile and was concerned that his lower front teeth were wearing away. Initially he saw an orthodontist who said his overbite was too severe and he needed, orthognathic surgery.
- As part of the diagnostic phase I took a record of centric occlusion and planned the OVD change using a leaf gauge. I asked our technician to make a full mouth digital wax up of the proposed changes and I made some Exaclear matrices for the posterior quadrants.
- I used these to transfer the OVD changes with heated direct composite onlays. He then completed a course of Invisalign to redistribute the teeth spacing. Following this, I performed crown lengthening surgery to his upper anteriors, then restored his whole dentition with Emax restorations.
- Finally, I replaced his missing LL5 with a dental implant. Mr R was delighted with the result, as we have achieved an aesthetic, functional, stable bite, without the need for surgery.
